En de wereld is alweer een ontwerper van Porsche armer: Anatole 'Tony' Lapine

Tony Lapine, Celebrated stylist of the Porsche 928, who also had significant input into the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, has died aged 81.

Anatole 'Tony' Lapine, Latvian-born designer, and former design chief at Porsche has died at his home in Baden-Baden, Germany, less than a month shy of his 82nd birthday.

With cars such as the Porsche 924, 944 and 928 in his back catalogue, as well as the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, Anatole Lapine, known universally as 'Tony', stood as one of the greatest sports cars designers. His cars bore the curvaceous hallmark of timelessness, with the 928, especially, standing out as a particularly prescient design.

Porsche's current design boss Michael Mauer said about Lapine: 'He shaped Porsche sports-car design over more than two decades. As a designer, he didn't follow fashion, but was forever setting new trends with his concepts.'

It was Lapine's work on concepts at General Motors — especially in design boss Bill Mitchell's secret workshop, Studio X — that brought him notoriety in the States and eventually led him to Porsche. At GM, Lapine worked on such concepts as the 1960 CERV I, the 1962 Corvair Monza GT, the 1963 Corvair Monza SS and the 1963-'64 CERV II.

Lapine also teamed with Larry Shinoda on the design of the iconic 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray. Earlier, he served as Dr. Dick Thompson's co-driver in the 1959 XP-87 Sting Ray at the SCCA 500-Mile Wisconsin Grand Prix in Elkhart Lake.

Born in 1930 in Riga, Lapine served an apprenticeship with Daimler-Benz after World War II, then moved to the USA where he found work with GM's advanced body engineering department in 1952. Eventually, GM transferred Lapine in 1965 to Germany to head the Opel Research Center, from which he was recruited by Porsche in 1969.
