The BMW 8 Series Coupe is the brand’s best looking car at the moment. It’s long, low, muscular and very pretty. While some enthusiasts don’t love it and think it’s not “BMW” enough, we think it looks fantastic and we aren’t alone. Automobile Magazinejust named the 8 Series its “Design of the Year”.

In this current automotive market where SUVs and crossovers rule, it’s refreshing to see a brand like BMW develop an all-new, very expensive luxury coupe, a car that isn’t the most budget-friendly to make. As Automobile points out, cars like the 8 Series doesn’t share any sort of tooling or body panels with any other car, so they’re rather expensive to make. It’s also a very expensive car for customers to buy, so its volume is going to be relatively low.

 

 

Despite that, BMW still made the 8 Series and we’re very happy it did. The 8er is a beautiful coupe and one that hits all the right notes.

 

Automobile breaks down some of the 8 Series’ design cues to explain why it wins their award. “Something we find impressive, both visually and in terms of the exceptional metal pressing technology that makes it possible, are the two beautifully delineated concave sections on the outer third of the hood. They provide a directional center plane for the hood, disappear just before merging, and allow a beautiful soft flow of sheetmetal into the grille’s upper outer corners. It is all subtle but masterfully executed—which is an appropriate summation of the entire Design of the Year.”

 

We’ve heard criticism that the 8 Series isn’t exciting enough or bold enough but it seems that it’s bold enough for Automobile and it’s certainly bold enough for us. Now we wait for the 8 Series Gran Coupe to come out, as that could look even better.

After seeing the BMW M8 Gran Coupe Concept, we’ve been very impatiently waiting for the 8er Gran Coupe’s official reveal. The Concept was a real stunner and one that built a ton of hype for the future production model. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to see the real thing, as the four-door 8 Series should debut later this year. If you want a quick teaser of it, some new spy photos have surfaced, showing off the BMW M850i Gran Coupe doing some snow testing. (We don’t own the spy photos but take a look at them here)

The car in question seems to be the BMW M850i variant, thanks to its sportier wheels, aggressive front air intakes and its trapezoidal exhausts. It also seems to be wearing BMW’s Sonic Speed Blue paint, previously seen on the M850i Coupe.

 

Mechanically, the BMW M850i Gran Coupe will be identical to the Coupe. So it will get the same 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8, making 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. It will also get the same automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive system. So expect 0-60 mph in the mid three-second range.

 

 

Though, many enthusiasts will find that the Gran Coupe version looks better. It’s long, low, four-door body style is very seductive and charms in the same way that the 6 Series Gran Coupe did. While its overall styling isn’t that much different from the coupe on which it’s based, the GC model does have a flair of its own. Personally, I prefer the M850i Gran Coupe to the standard two-door Coupe, but it’s hard to go wrong with either.

 

We can’t wait for the 8 Series Gran Coupe to be revealed. While we doubt it will drive much different than the Coupe version, we still can’t wait to get our hands on it.

Hij had 't er niet over (over de vormgeving, wel over de klank), maar ik wel: ik vind de interieurvormgeving een stap achteruit tov de vorige '6. ICE is een stap voorwaarts en 't digitaal dashboard is flashy new waawzers, dat wel.

De neus (exterieur), daar wen ik wel aan. De kont: nooit. Globaal gezien een (voor onze Europese smaak) sterke stap achteruit, als je 't mij vraagt. Maar die '8 is dan ook niet (meer) gemaakt voor die moeilijke West-Europeanen, denk ik?

Shortly after its market launch, the new BMW 8 Series Coupe gets its first special edition. Sold under the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe First Edition badge, the luxury coupe will be produced in a limited quantity of 400 at the BMW Dingolfing plant between April and June 2019.

A newly developed BMW Individual special paint finish Frozen Barcelona Blue metallic adorns the exterior of the M850i Coupe and it’s paired with the upgraded BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, which, in addition to the side window surrounds, also includes the BMW kidney grille frame and slats, the air breather applications and tailpipe trims finished in black.

 

 

The dark accents featured on the special edition model are complemented by 20-inch M light alloy wheels with a Y-spoke design finished in Jet Black. Available optional features also include, inter alia, an M Carbon roof and an M Carbon exterior package.

 

A special feature offered for the edition models is the BMW Individual full leather trim Merino in the combination Ivory White/Night Blue. The interior design features also comprise the M leather-covered steering wheel as well as the BMW Individual Alcantara roof liner, each finished in the color Night Blue.

Inside the car, BMW Individual interior trim strips in a Black Piano finish, which are located in the centre of the cockpit, bear the lettering “First Edition 1/400”. Moreover, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and the Crafted Clarity glass applications on the start/stop button, the iDrive Controller, the volume control and the illuminated gearshift lever complement the luxurious interior ambience.

The special edition model is powered by the same 390 kW/530 hp, eight-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The V8 powerplant is combined with an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission and transfers engine power to the road via the BMW xDrive four-wheel drive technology.

Pricing and worldwide allocations have yet to be revealed.
