l.

My Grp. 2 ALPINA truly did end up being a "barn find", such an amzing story that I am tempted to write an e-book or some other such about it and the restoration of the car currently underway. Constructed by ALPINA in late '73, early '74, raced in Grp. 2 competition through out '74 and early '75 then retired. Sold the "Hennericci" and apparently changed to race in mountain hillclimb events (including Trento Bondone). Body work changed to Grp. 5 "Schnitzer style late 70's, nearly everything else remained (minus the twin filler 100L fuel tank) and some relatively minor odds/ends. Sold sometime in early 80's to another Italian (have the name somewhere), then sold to an American again early 80's, run once or twice and then run into a tire barrier and damaged (minor) and put away in a "carriage house" (fancy barn) in upstate New York for over 20 years. Sold to another private party in 2001/2002, aquired by me in "2002". Didn't really know what it was, thought it might be a Schnitzer Grp. 2 car, but with the help of a smart friend in Norway and careful examination of photo's and ultimately confirmation by ALPINA themselves, final confirmation that it was the car (as they put it "one - of - one") the only one made by them. At the time built in 1974 considered to be the most highly evolved BMW 2002 ever constructed (ALPINA engine with Schnitzer twin cam 16v head, slide injection, ALPINA 3 piece wheels, rear mounted radiators and on and on and on. Car is currently under restoration here in the US with target date to complete 2013. Lots more info in my blog + various restoration photo's (search labels for "ALPNA Grp. 2"). Enjoy!

Here is the first batch of images of IAS' nearly-new B8 Cabrio. It was already in pretty good condition when he bought it however he brought it to Alpina for 're-newing'. It now has a new engine, buffelleather interior and reconditioned original Alpinablue paint. Rumour has it the work order for the B8 Cabrio 'renewing' was the longest ever in Alpina history with 6 pages in total!

Weetjes :inlove:

Thanks!

The car was not completely rebuilt a la Yannick's CSL - it simply didn't need to be. In any case, I would be surprised if Alpina accepted to do such a job.

The mandate I gave Alpina was to restore the car to a very high mechanical and cosmetic level. I did not give them a specific budgetary cap, but asked them to tell me what they thought should be done. The biggest job was changing the engine block and pistons to new Alusil parts. The original Nikasil block had developed dark patches in several of the cylinders which Alpina could not explain the reasons for. Although it ran fine, I didn't want to take the chance to have a breakdown and head back for a new engine (it took me 6 months to get a date to take the car in!) so I decided to cough it up and get a new block and pistons. Everything else that needed to be replaced in the engine compartment was.

While the engine was out the clutch was changed and the bay cleaned. The rear differential was also dismounted and checked and the seals replaced. Steering had a pipe changed but suspension and brakes were deemed in very good condition so were not touched. Same applied to the exhaust.

The car was sent to the paint shop with a mandate for a repaint, but I was told this was not necessary as a professional polish and high gloss coating would be sufficient (I think the photos attest to this). A couple of minor dents were removed.

The biggest visual transformation was inside the car: I had the original BMW Sports seats which were in blue alcantara/black leather replaced with original Alpina Recaro black buffalo leather. As Alpina simply don't make buffalo leather interiors anymore (they only have a few sheets left in the workshop for repair jobs), and that Recaro don't make these seats anymore, I had to find a used interior. I got very luck and found this via a specialist called Car Parts Mueller. While not perfect (it must have come from an e36 B3 Cabrio, so at least 15 years old), it is in very good condition. Only the driver seat heating element is not working and the part is not available anywhere. The center console wood trim was removed and replaced with buffalo leather in blue/green stitching, and the steering wheel was also retrimmed in new leather. Carpets in the cabin and boot were replaced, and the radio (a Becker SAT/NAV) was replaced with an original BMW Business CD. An original antenna was fitted to replace the SAT/NAV item. The phone kit was removed, and an original BMW alarm fitted.

I have kept the original interior and this is being stored in Buchloe.

These are the highlights but I won't bore you with the details!

The whole job took almost 3 months but I feel the time and money spent c.gifwas well worth it!

Imad

Ik ben oprecht jaloers op die man.

Hij mist echter nog enkele zaken:

- E34 B10 Biturbo (hadden ze dát maar ooit in Touring gemaakt...)

- E12 B7 S Turbo

- E36 B8 4,6 Touring ipv zijn cabrio

(- E9 B2(S))

Klopt denk ik ja.

Is zulks niks voor jou, een B8 4,6 (of 4,0) in plaats van je M3 GT?
